LLC Programming Ideas for Grade 7-12 Students

Savvy library programming can support division III and IV classrooms teach information literacy skills, an imperative skills for students. Find some ideas for using four resources from the ORC to enliven programming for division III and IV students.

Be sure to look for how to link some of these ideas to a monthly library contest. Don't have a budget for monthly library contests? Don't worry! Often students love to read in the library. Offering them an opportunity to sit in comfortable seating while drinking hot chocolate is a surprisingly sought after reward.

Ways to use Literary Reference Center in the Library Learning Commons

In grades 7-12 students begin to explicitly examine and analyze the literature they are reading. Library learning commons programming can support this process by highlighting academic and reference articles related to the literature students are reading. This will help to link what is happening in the classroom to your library learning commons.


Ways to use TeachingBooks.net in the Library Learning Commons

The TeachingBooks.net database is perhaps the most easily identifiable resource that supports library programming. As it says on the homepage, TeachingBooks provides instructional materials that enliven K-12 reading experiences. Here are some ideas that have been "field tested" in school libraries across Alberta.

Ways to use Teen Health and Wellness in the Library Learning Commons

Teen Health and Wellness provides users with a straightforward discussion of all health and wellness topics related to teens. Not only is this resource an excellent support for the junior/senior high health curriculum, this resource also includes content for CALM, Foods, Science and Physical Education. Sectioned articles and embedded read-aloud, text translation and citations make this resource accessible for all learners. In addition, numerous interactive features including student polls, personal stories, student-created videos, and Alberta specific hotlines make this resource a superior support for students in grades 7-12.
