Ways to use BookFLIX in the Library Learning Commons

Author Study of the Month

This is very similar to the read aloud programming. Select an author to highlight in your library for the month. If you have multiple divisions in your school it is ideal to select an author for each division (I, II, III, IV). Feature one of the author's BookFLIX books during the first library period of the month. Have a selection of the author's books available. During the next library period read and discuss the author page found along the left-hand side of the screen for every BookFLIX fictional title.

Monthly Library Contest Idea: Throughout the month students can submit a short book review of the one of the author's books. Recordings or podcasts are always welcome for those students who are unable to write their review.

Featured Staff Pick of the Month

Why not have your staff members submit their favorite picks at the beginning of the year and feature one per division per month in your library? This is not only a great way to invite staff in to library programming it is also a fantastic way to increase circulation. If the book is available on BookFLIX, why not run it at the end of the month during the library period.

Monthly Library Contest Idea: Keeping the identity of the teacher who submitted the favorite book of the month a secret will allow you to have student submit their guesses on what teacher chose the book and why. Sometimes for a hint you can post a picure of the teacher hidden behind the book mid month. This is a wonderful way to have students lining up at your door at the first of the month.

Guided Inquiry Support

If you have division I students coming in to the library to find resources for their inquiry projects the nonfiction component of BookFLIX offers some wonderful support to young inquirers. The embedded real-voice read aloud feature allows for any learner, regardless of their reading ability to pull information from the book.

In addition, if you have teachers requesting books on a specific topic or author, why not include suggestions from BookFLIX to include with the print from your library?

Library Read Aloud Time

Don't have time to offer a read aloud during your library programming? If you have a projector or SMART board in your library BookFLIX allows you to play a fictional book for your students while freeing you up. It is ideal to select a book/author that your currently have in your collection. Use the read aloud as a way of introducing your students to the author. Have a selection of the author's books out and available for take out following the read aloud. This is a sure fire way to start a holds list!

If you have any of the books featured in BookFLIX, you can display them by your reading centre to make the link for yoru students between digital and print.

Library Reading Centre

Inevitably there are always students who are finished making their selections early in the library period. Many times they are encouraged to sit quietly and read. If you have iPads, tablets or laptops/computers in your library setting why not set up a reading centre? BookFLIX can be preloaded on the device(s) to facilitate independent access.  Make sure you have headphones available or better yet have students bring their headphones to library with them.
