Ways to use TeachingBooks.net in the
Library Learning Commons

Featured Canadian Author of the Month

TeachingBooks.net makes it easy to feature a Canadian author to highlight in your library for the month. If you have multiple divisions in your school it is ideal to select an author for each division (I, II, III, IV). A listing of Canadian authors can be found at the bottom of the TeachingBooks.net homepage in the "Ways to Enliven Reading" section.

Direct students to the author's TeachingBooks.net  page during the first library period of the month. You can link the author's TeachingBooks.net page to your library website by embedding the permalink on your web page. Perhaps you may want to play the author's audio name pronunciation, a video or an author reading for your students. The book readings are a wonderful way of doing a "book talk" during a library period. Have a selection of the author's books available. During the next library direct students to the author webpage or blog if available.

Monthly Library Contest Idea: Students can submit a short book review of the one of the author's books. Recordings or podcasts are always welcome and can be loaded on to your library webpage when password protected.

Featured Staff Pick of the Month

Why not have your staff members submit their favorite picks at the beginning of the year and feature one per division per month in your library? This is not only a great way to invite staff in to library programming it is also a fantastic way to increase circulation. If the book is available on TeachingBook.net, why not link the page to your library website or create a flyer with a QR code?

Monthly Library Contest Idea: Keeping the identity of the teacher who submitted the favorite book of the month a secret will allow you to have student submit their guesses on what teacher chose the book and why. Sometimes for a hint you can post a picture of the teacher hidden behind the book mid month. This is a wonderful way to have students lining up at your door at the first of the month.

Supporting Classroom Novel Studies

Some schools have class sets of novel that are housed and/or checked through the library. A great way to let your staff know what resources are available for a particular book is to print off a shelf card from TeachingBooks.net for the book and attach it to the box/shelf that houses the set of novels. To do this simply find the book in TeachingBooks.net and select the shelf card option from the menu bar along the right-hand of the screen.

The Alberta Education authorized ELA Novel and Nonfiction resources listings for grades 4-12 are included in TeachingBooks.net. To access scroll to the middle of the homepage and select " See all Alberta reading lists" to link to a full listing of pages available.

Rocky Mountain Book Awards

TeachingBooks.net can help you promote, book talk and create programming around the Rocky Mountain Book Award list. This listing changes every year and TeachingBooks.net has the most recent listing available at the beginning of each school year. To access scroll to the middle of the homepage and select "Rocky Mountain Award 2014, Grades 4-7" to link to the page with full details.

To further promote these books in your library, why note create flyers with QR codes and have them on the tables in your library cafe style? You can also create a QR code from the permalink of the book page and tape it to the front of the book so students can scan it to get support materials to help in their selection. However, if you do not want to use QR codes a great face out display will also help with circulation.

Young Readers Choice Awards

If you promote Young Reader's Choice Awards (YRCA) in your library instead of Rocky Mountain Book Awards, TeachingBooks.net can still help you promote, book talk and create programming. YRCA has three categories - grades 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. These listings change every year and TeachingBooks.net has the most recent listing available at the beginning of each school year. To access scroll to the middle of the homepage and select "Pacific Northwest Library Association Young Reader's Choice Awards 2014" to link to the page with full details. You can jump to other YRCA listing by clicking on the link on the right-hand side of the screen.
